MR. BOXHALL: When I was lowered away I was the last boat but one on the port side. There was one of the lifeboats lowered away after I left, a few minutes after I left, and then there were no more boats hanging in the davits on the port side. . . . SENATOR SMITH: And all of the lifeboats had been lowered when the boat that you got in was lowered? MR. BOXHALL: All but one. SENATOR SMITH: Where was that one? MR. BOXHALL: That was the next boat to me, aft. SENATOR SMITH: A lifeboat or a collapsible? MR. BOXHALL: A lifeboat. SENATOR SMITH: Did you have anything to do with filling these boats? MR. BOXHALL: I was assisting to get people along there, but I was not standing at the side of the boat, lifting them in, actually. SENATOR SMITH: What can you say about the anxiety of people to get into these boats; was there great anxiety? MR. BOXHALL: No, sir; I can not say that I saw that. SENATOR SMITH: What can you say as to whether they were reluctant to get in? MR. BOXHALL: I did not notice that, either. SENATOR SMITH: Were there many people on the boat deck when you got into this boat? MR. BOXHALL: No, sir. SENATOR SMITH: Were there any people at all? MR. BOXHALL: There were some around by the other boat. . . . SENATOR SMITH: Where was the captain? MR. BOXHALL: The captain was standing by this emergency boat. SENATOR SMITH: The one you got in? MR. BOXHALL: Yes, sir. SENATOR SMITH: How far from it? MR. BOXHALL: He was standing by the wheelhouse door, just abreast of this boat. SENATOR SMITH: By the wheelhouse door, just abreast of this boat? MR. BOXHALL: Yes. SENATOR SMITH: What was he doing? |
M. BOXHALL : Quand on m’a fait descendre, j’étais le dernier canot, mais un du côté bâbord. Il y a eu un des canots de sauvetage qui a été affalé après mon départ, quelques minutes après mon départ, et il n’y avait plus de canots suspendus dans les bossoirs du côté bâbord. . . . LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Et tous les canots de sauvetage avaient été affalés lorsque le canot dans lequel vous êtes entré a été affalé? M. BOXHALL : Tous sauf un. LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Où était celui-là? M. BOXHALL : C’était le canot à côté de moi, à l’arrière. LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Un canot de sauvetage ou un canot démontable? M. BOXHALL : Un canot de sauvetage. LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Avez-vous participé au remplissage de ces canots? M. BOXHALL : J’aidais les gens à s’y rendre, mais je ne me tenais pas sur le côté du canot pour les soulever, en fait. LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Que pouvez-vous dire au sujet de l’anxiété des gens qui voulaient monter à bord de ces canots? Y a-t-il eu beaucoup d’anxiété? M. BOXHALL : Non, monsieur; je ne peux pas dire que j’ai vu cela. LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Que pouvez-vous nous dire s’ils étaient réticents à entrer? M. BOXHALL : Je n’ai pas remarqué cela non plus. LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Y avait-il beaucoup de gens sur le pont des embarcations quand vous êtes monté sur ce canot? M. BOXHALL : Non, monsieur. LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Y avait-il des gens? M. BOXHALL : Il y en avait à proximité de l’autre canot. . . . LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Où était le capitaine ? M. BOXHALL : Le capitaine se tenait à côté de ce canot d’urgence. LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Celui que vous avez pris? M. BOXHALL : Oui, monsieur. LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : À quelle distance? M. BOXHALL : Il se tenait près de la porte de la timonerie, juste à côté de ce canot.
